Is Hip Hop Really Dead?
Music has changed so much over the years, but does it still have the same impact as it did in the generations before us? Of course NOT!
Those times where you just sit back, close your eyes and feel every word of the song, you can’t tell me your not inlove with that genuine feeling of love and music. I can’t grasp the concept of Hip Hop being dead if artist like Common, Mos Def, and Lupe Fiasco are still blessing us with their music. What has gotten into the minds of our generation? If you look up Hip Hop, you’ll be surprised that one definition says “Closely associated with Rap music” while definition two says “Rap music”. Maybe its just me but I can’t see how the two aren’t different, who makes up these definitions? For example: Yo Gotti is a Rapper, while Talib Kweli is a Hip Hop artist. Most rappers spit about the hoes, money, drugs, cars, & clothes just over different beats, but its always the same thing. On the other hand, most Hip Hop artist dip and dab into situations outside of what we are used to. Knocking a persons hustle is definitely not my thing but, I’m just very open minded when it comes to music. Don’t get me wrong, I listen to rap, hip hop, underground artist, r&b, spoken word, etc. Its all about the mindset that your in as a person.
Older Hip Hop songs just have a certain feel to it that some listeners just can’t pull away from. Remember the song “You Got Me” by The Roots? Now THAT IS some real Hip Hop type shit! All I’m saying is, all types of music gives you something to relate to but at times we just need that mental stimulation. Something that we can actually relate to, that shit that just makes us feel good when it comes on. You ever get butterflies when the beat drops? We need more lyrics and less hooks, more meaning and less stokes, all people listen to now are the beats. The beats may be hott but at the end of the day, What was the song really about?
Hip Hop isn’t dead at all, some of the artist are just under-rated and underground. If you open your minds and ears, you can hear more of what the eyes can’t see. So NO we can’t and wont combine the two genres of music because Hip Hop never died. Times have just changed, and music is different now.
